Lafayette Theatre
In 1916 The Lafayette Theatre and the Lafayette Players eventually came under the management of Levy and Quality Amusement Company. Levy abandoned the vaudeville and expanded the troupe to two permanent companies based in Harlem and Chicago and two traveling companies that toured the East Coast and the South. The Lafayette Players ultimately became one of the most respected African- American dramatic companies in the nation, known for reproducing Broadway plays and Shakespearean productions with all-black casts. Between 1916-1919 during Levy’s tenure at the theatre the Lafayette Players staged over a hundred serious dramatic works by both black and white writers.
